I just recently learned that James Horner is going to compose the score for The Amazing Spiderman. So that has me interested in the film right there. I’ve been a serious James Horner fan since I was 12. The question is: will he be inspired by the film to write something amazing or will it be just another variation of Bicentennial Man, which was a variation of Sneakers. He has written so much music that sounds similar that it’s hard to remember that when he’s on fire no one can touch him. Not Williams, Not Goldsmith. Certainly not anyone in the current crop of bland, boring electronic composers. James Horner’s like 70’s slugger Reggie Jackson. Sure he strikes out a lot, but when he hits them out of the park, they’re long, high, towering home runs.
Anyway, here’s my list Top Ten James Horner themes, in the olden days it was the music that had me replaying the tapes over and over and over and then when it was all about CD’s the songs that I repeated over and over and now that we can listen to whatever we want, whenever we want, well here’s the playlist:
Braveheart – Sons of Scotland
Star Trek III – Stealing The Enterprise
Apollo 13 – The Launch
Glory – Closing Titles
Willow – Elora Danan
Legend of Zorro – My Family Is My Life
Field of Dreams – The Place Where Dreams Come True
The Rocketeer – Main Title/Takeoff
Krull – Riding The Fire Mares
Braveheart – End Titles
So, you know someone should pass him this list and remind him about all the great movie scores he’s written so Amazing Spiderman doesn’t sound like A Beautiful Mind.
